Accio
(A-see-oh)
Incantation for the Summoning Charm. From the Latin accio, to call or summon. Hence it is used to summon things, for example, 'Accio broomstick!'
Alohomora
(AL-o-ho-MOR-ah)
Incantation for the Unlocking Charm, which literally opens locks, such as on locked doors.
Aparecium
(a-par-EE-see-um)
A spell to make invisible ink appear. From the Latin appareo, to become visible or appear.
Aranea Exterme
(From the film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets)
A spell used to repel spiders. From the Latin aranea, spider and extermino, to drive out or banish.
Avada Kedavra
(uh-VAH-duh kuh-DAH-vruh)
Incantation for the Death/Killing Curse. One of the three Unforgivable Curses, this spell kills the target instantaneously with a blinding flash of green light. A difficult spell to perform which leaves no trace, with no known blocking spell. The wizard who performs this curse on another human would be imprisoned for life in Azkaban prison.

A spell to conjure a flock of birds.

A spell which seals a door.
Crucio
(KROO-see-oh)
Incantation for the Cruciatus Curse. One of the three Unforgivable Curses, which cause the target to undergo extreme and intense pain. The wizard who performs this curse on another human would be imprisoned for life in Azkaban prison.
Delertius
(deh-LEE-tree-us)
A spell to remove a Prior Incantato spell in sight.
Densaugeo
(den-sah-OO-gi-oh)
A hex which enlarges whatever the spell hits.
Diffindo
(dih-FIN-doe)
A spell which splits an object into half.
Dissendium
(dis-EN-dee-um)
A spell which reveals a secret passageway behind the statue of the one-eyed witch at Hogwarts which leads to the Honeydukes' cellar.
Engorgio
(en-GOR-gee-oh)
Incantation for the Swelling Charm.
Ennervate
(EN-er-vayt)
Incantation for the Reviving spell, which brings a stupefied person back to consciousness.
Evanesco
(ev-an-ES-ko)
Incantation for the Vanishing Charm. The spell makes something vanish completely.
Expecto Patronum
(ex-PEK-toh pa-TROH-num)
Incantation for the Patronus Charm, which repels Dementors. The spell conjures a patronus, an embodiment of the positive thoughts of the performer which drives the Dementors away.
Expelliarmus
(ex-pel-ee-AR-mus)
Incantation for the Disarming Charm. Used mainly in wizard duels to disarm the target of their wand.
Ferula
(feh-ROO-lah)
A spell to conjure a sling for a broken limb.
Finite Incantatem

A spell which stops all current spells in use.
Furnunculus
(fur-NUN-kyoo-lus)
A curse that causes boils.
Impedimenta
(im-ped-ih-MEN-tah)
Incantation for the Impediment Jinx which slows down and obstruct attackers.
Imperio
(im-PAIR-ee-oh)
Incantation for the Imperious Curse. One of the three Unforgivable Curses which gives the user complete control over the target. The wizard who performs this curse on another human would be imprisoned for life in Azkaban prison.

A spell which repels water.

A fire-lighting spell.

A spell which binds the target's legs together.

A spell to move objects.
Mobilicorpus

A spell to move someone who is either passed out or incapable of walking on his or her own.
Mosmorde

Incantation for the Dark Mark, a sign of the Death Eaters make up of a skull with a serpent in its mouth.

A spell which disables the Lumos spell or extinguish light on your wand.
Obliviate
(oh-BLI-vee-ate)
Incantation for the Memory Charm, which modifies or erase the target's memory. A common charm used countless times on Muggles when discovering an important wizarding secret.

A spell to conjure flowers.
Petrificus Totalus
(pe-TRI-fi-cus to-TAH-lus)
A spell to bind the target's arms and legs together.
Point Me
A spell which points your wand north.

A spell which disables or reverse the Sonorus spell.
Reducio
(re-DOO-see-oh)
Incantation for the Shrinking Charm.
Reducto
A spell to blast apart a solid object.
Relashio
A spell to make someone let go of something.
Reparo
(re-PAR-oh)
Incantation for the Reparing Charm. Used to repair objects such as a broken window pane or broken glasses.
Rictusempra
(ric-tu-SEM-pra)
Incantation for the Tickling Charm. The target becomes tickled by an invisible force.
Riddikulus
(ri-di-KYOO-lus)
A charm which repels a Boggart. The spell makes the Boggart takes on a funny appearance causing laughter which eventually kills it.
Scourgify
(SKUR-ji-fy)
Incantation for the Scouring Charm that cleans.
Serpensortia
(ser-pen-SOR-sha)
A spell to conjure a snake.
Sonorus
(so-NO-rus)
A spell to magnify one's voice. Compare Quietus.
Stupefy
(STOO-puh-fye)
Incantation for the Stunning Charm. The spell stuns the target, which causes unconsciousness.
Tarantallegra
(TAIR-an-tuh-LEG-ruh)
A charm that causes the target to jerk in a kind of dance.
Waddiwasi
(wah-di-WAH-see)
A charm taht is used to shoot objects out of tight spaces or spots.
Wingardium Leviosa
(win-GAR-dee-um lev-ee-OH-sa)
Incantation for the Levitation Charm. This spell levitates any object in mid-air.
